On the river banks of Fonias, at the eastern end of the island, stands the mediaeval tower of 12m in height that bears the name of the river, built after 1431 and made of stone, plaster and tiles. It was constructed in the line of defensive works by the Gattilusi, who dominated over the area during that period.

The Gattilusi Tower is located in the capital of the island and was built in 1430 in order to protect the island from pirate raids. In the evening the tower is illuminated and accompanies the visitor on imaginary trips to distant eras.
