It is one of the most significant archeological sites in Greece, which is dedicated to the worship and the celebration of the Great Gods located in the settlement of Paleopolis. Around the sacred rock, where the sacrifices took place, started the construction of buildings in the 6th century BC, which served the devotional needs, while it rose to prominence in the 3rd century BC, when brilliant buildings were constructed by the potentates of the Hellenistic period. Nowadays, the site is kept in a very good condition, given the vandalism that it has suffered over the years, but also the strong seismic concussions that have hit the area all these centuries. The entrance is from the east, where there is a marble propylon of Ionic order decorated with a frieze, an oblation of Ptolemy the Philadelphus. The circular structure found in the site also functioned as a place of assembly. To the north of the sanctuary was located the palace, which also included the "adytum", the entrance of which was guarded by the bronze statue of Cadmilus. The inscription found here forbidden the entrance to the non-initiate. To the south lies the sanctuary, the place which was allocated for the upmost ritual of intendance. It is an imposing building built in the late 4th century BC.
