At the homonymous plateau of the Lefka Ori lays the historical village of Askifou. Its name originates from the ancient word ‘skifos’ meaning cup. The mountainous village, located at 730 meters altitude and 45 kilometrs distance from Chania, will be on your way going towards Sfakia. In the village you can find tavernas with delicious traditional cuisine and enjoy sfakiani pitta at the traditional coffee house, with its thin dough, mizithra cheese and honey, whilst listening to stories by the locals. Hostels function in the area, which will make your stay in mountainous Crete a pleasant one. Your visit at Askifou can be combined with mountain activities such as hiking to the surrounding mountain peaks, cycling or even hunting.
