A giant fortress, which is well-preserved, is located on the tranquil island of Gramvousa, and was built in 1579, during the advent of the Venetians. Moreover, it played a significant role in the protection of the passage Crete-Antikythira and in the Revolution against the Turks, when it was used as a base, due to its strategically location. It is the ideal place for envisagement and brown study, since it is located on the sheer rocks without a trace of civilization and the open sea below spreading in the horizon. You can also combine your trip to Gramvousa Island with a swim in the adverse exotic beach of Balos. The ideal hours for visiting the castle are either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
