The owners of Koukouvagia are grateful for their Cretan heritage and the gift of grandfather Aristides’ country home. The deserted house they inherited was known to the locals as Koukouvagia, “the owl”, the name of its last occupant. They felt the name also reflected the bird’s eye view of this place, which was used as a German observation post during WWII.
Koukouvagia café was established in 1997 and has since become a landmark, together with the neighbouring Prophet Elias church and the Venizelos statesmen family graves. Only a ten-minute drive from the center of Chania, “The Owl” offers panoramic views of the old town and its Venetian harbor, the bay of Chania and the majestic White Mountains.
Enjoy generous portions of snacks, salads and desserts produced daily in their kitchen, using fresh local ingredients. Feast on their mouthwatering desserts, the outcome of subtly refined family recipes. They are open throughout the day, for sunny breakfasts, breathtaking sunsets and drinks overlooking the moonlit sea.
