The Cave of Panagia Arkoudiotissa is a famed cave near Chania, which was a place of worship to the goddess Artemis during the Mycenaean period. The stalagmite that resembles a bear is, according to the legend, the bear, which terrified the area and was petrified by Panagia to protect the monks of the nearby monastery. Just 5km from the cave of Panagia Arkoudiotissa descending the stairs after Gouvernetou Monastery is located the Cave of Agios Ioannis the Hermit with a small chapel in its interior dedicated to the Saint. Ioannis the Hermit lived in a cave next to Spilia village in Kolibari for three years. It is said that he wandered around naked like a wild animal. The remarkable water flowing from the rock, where he hit his stick, is yet another of his miracles.
