Just two hours from the bustle of Athens, across the new Rio-Antirrio bridge from the cosmopolitan Patras; or alternatively a few kilometers’ pleasant drive from Lamia, the prefecture of Fokida welcomes you. With 44,183 inhabitants, Fokida borders the prefectures Voiotia (Boeotia) to the east, Fthiotida to the north, Aitoloakarnania to the west, and all along its south side the Corinthian Gulf. The regional capital is the city of Amfissa.
A place of unspoiled beauty, it has enjoyed since ancient times a special place of honor. The sacred shrine of Delphi, often called ‘the navel of the earth,’ was for centuries a crossroad for pilgrim-travelers, and a capital of Greek culture. The ancient Fokis (Fokida) has not forsaken that role in more modern times. It was the place of decisive battles during the Greek War of Independence, as in its villages some of the most famous heroes of 1821 fought for their country. Today, thanks to the many visitors, Fokida continues to play a leading role in the image of Greece internationally. Besides the numerous historical and archaeological sites, the district offers a wide range of options for all kinds of nature-lovers: the tall and proud ranges of Giona and Vardousia provide a challenge to mountaineers, but reward them justly with their wild beauty. One of the most popular destinations for skiers and tourists, the national forest of Mount Parnassos fills up every year with visitors from all over Greece. The lake Mornos, although man-made, blends naturally with the surrounding mountains and offers a unique subject for photography buffs, and an appealing backdrop for travelers in the region.
For those who prefer the calm of the sea over the mysterious charm of the mountains, coastal Fokida offers its traditional fishing villages and picturesque towns. Fokida is one of the places in Greece that has really lived a full life. Over the centuries it has enjoyed glorious periods of growth and prosperity; it has also experienced passionate struggles for freedom, its residents at times suffering unbearable slavery and subjugation. Because of the distance of the district region from some the more modern developments of the country, visitors can discern in each stone, each proud fir tree; can feel each blast of the north wind in the highlands of the mountain ranges, the energy of human habitation. From the first inhabitants, the Pelasgians, who migrated from the north and joined with other Greek tribes, the Aeolians and the Dorians, to the current residents, the place has not lost its warmth and hospitality. Continuing the sacred tradition of Zeus Xenios (the hospitable), the locals will not hesitate to guide you along secret paths to places only mountain goats should go, cold, bubbly mountain springs, views you’d expect to see only on postcards. This is Fokida. Wild, yet warm and cozy. Mountain and sea. Ready for you to conquer and get to know the authentic Greece.
