Fokida is one of the only places in Greece you can visit many times, at different seasons of the year, and always be surprised at how many different things you can see and do in each of those seasons. For this reason, Fokida, like all exurban Greece, is flooded by visitors on holidays and summer vacations. This has an upside, since in precisely those periods, the localities hold festivals and celebrations, to renew and to remind visitors of their roots and traditions.
6th January: The Festival of Epiphany celebration in Itea, which is observed traditionally by the sanctification of the water by casting the Holy Cross into the sea, under the psalms of the priests and the tunes of the Philharmonic.
Carnival: The observation of Carnival at Amfissa includes the typical march of the chariots, the burning of the Carnival King, and plenty of dancing and fun. The night before, the streets of Amfissa are filled with the ''stichia of Charmaina'', a crowd of black-clad torch bearers, dragging chains as they roam about the city.
Alevromoutzouromata of Galaxidi: A time-honored tradition, whose roots reach to the Byzantine era. At Galaxidi, the observation of Clean Monday takes its most active form. In a unique atmosphere, reminiscent of a bloodless war, armed with tons of colored flour the participants go on a rampage. After a weekend of festivities, including parades marches of chariots and original music playing in the streets of the picturesque town, come the "alevromoutzouromata." Residents and visitors flock to the day of the highly anticipated "battle" on the pier and on the beach and provide a memorable finale. The pandemonium that follows is beyond words. Wait to experience it for yourself. If you find yourself in the area, at this time do not miss it. The flour is on the house, courtesy of the Municipality of Galaxidi. You only have to bring your oldest clothes and your wildest mood!
Easter: To ensure a complete visit to Fokida, one should not miss a traditional Easter lamb roasting on a spit that takes place in the squares of the mountain villages.
The summer is the perfect time for all sorts of sports. One can watch traditional contests, such as the Fokika in Amfissa; the Diakeia in Artotina and the games in Pentapolis during August. One final celebration is that of the anniversary of the Sea Battle of Agali in Itea, observed every first Sunday of September; including cultural events, student parades and religious ceremonies.
Diakia: The last week of August does not necessarily mean a stereotypically melancholy end to summer. Residents of Artotina, together with participants from the neighboring villages, not to mention the summer vacationers put together an athletic and cultural festival. Though open to all ages, typically the kids steal the show. The Diakia, taking its name from the revolutionary hero Athanasios Diakos, favorite son of the region, includes track & field, shot put, football, traditional celebrations and cultural events. The festivities last for five days (usually the last week of August) and promise to offer viewers and participants unforgettable memories and authentic entertainment.
