If you find yourselves between the settlements of Maroneia and Proskinites you can visit the cave of Maroneia on the hillsides of Ismaros. It is a quite special cave not only because of its geological interest but also because of the myth surrounding it. The locals call it the cave of the “Cyclopes” or “Polyfimos”, who is said to have lived and was blinded by Odysseus according to Mythology. The cave is 350 meters long and 15-20 meters wide. If you choose to explore it, you will find stalactites, stalagmites, tiny ponds and lots of rooms. Moreover, the cave is of historical importance as, according to the findings, it was inhibited from the early Neolithic period up to the byzantine years. Nowadays, its only residents are a group of bats. It is highly recommended that you have a guide for your tour.
