The locals call it lake of Mitriko or Mother Lake. The name Ismarida comes from mount Ismaros due the short distance from it. It is located in the southern part of the prefecture and is of vital importance as it is protected by the international treaty Ramsar. This 2000-3000 acre lake is the biggest sweet water lake in Greece. Its deepest point is 1,5 meters and it is the habitat of lots of bird types such as “leptomyta”, which is one of the rarest on earth. There are more than 190 types of birds such as the “Thalassosfiriktis”, “Chouliaromyta”, “Kalamokanas”, “Nerochelidono” etc. Except for the rich fauna, the lake also possesses rich flora as its biggest part is covered with water lilies and reeds. Two rivers, Vosvozis and Lissos, feed the lake, which is mainly used for fishing but for water supply as well.
