The lake Vistonida is located on the borders between the prefectures of Rodopi and Xanthi. Another lake protected by the international treaty Ramsar. Vistonida is connected with the sea through the lake of Porto Lagos. That is the reason why its water is semi-sweet. However, it has a quite rich flora with willows, poplars and platanus surrounding the lake. Its size is 54000 acres and the deepest point is 3,5-4 meters. The fauna is rich as well as the lake is the house for over 230 types of birds and fish. Kosynthos, Kompsatos and Aspropotamos are the three rivers that “feed” the lake. Vistonida is ideal for fishing activities. Vistonida and Porto Lagos are two of the most important biotopes in Greece. The two chapels, Agios Nikolaos and Virgin Mary Pantanassa that are built in the lake are worth visiting.
