The church of Panagia Krimniotissa is located in Pahia Ammos, which was named after the precipice ("krimnos" in Greek), the high cliff on which it is built. The church impresses both due to its location, since it seems to hover in the air and offers a magnificent view to the northern Aegean Sea, and due to its tale. According to tradition, the icon, which is kept here, had been thrown in the sea by the Christian inhabitants of Asia Minor to save it from the looting of the iconoclasts. Around 1700, a boat almost sank due to the severe rough seas, while sailing in the waters around Samothrace. Then, the captain descried the icon in the sea and directed the crew to board it on the ship. The gale simmered down immediately. During that night, the Virgin Mary appeared to the captain in his sleep and asked him to go to Samothrace. The priest of the island placed the icon in the church, but every night the picture was gone and the inhabitants found it on the tall rock. As a result, it did not take them long to understand the wish of Panagia and therefore they built the chapel which embellishes the precipice today.
