It is housed in the archeological site of Paleopolis and several findings from the archeological site of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods are displayed in its four halls. The reproduction of the worldwide noted statue of Nike (victory) catches the eye of the visitors. The Nike of Samothrace, made around 190 BC, was revealed in 1863 by the excavations of the French envoy Champoiseau. Made of Parian marble and with a height of 2 meters and 75cm, Nike was a tribute of Dimitrios the Besieger after his victory in Cyprus and it had been placed on the fore of a ship with open wings to be seen from far and announce his victory. Although the original is hosted in the Louvre, the representation displayed in the archaeological museum gives a glimpse of the grandeur of Greek Antiquity.
Opening hours: 8:30-15:00.
