One of the biggest byzantine monasteries of Thrace thrived in the 11th-12th century on the inaccessible, evergreen hillsides of mountain Papiko. The combination of the wild area with the relatively short distance from Egnatia road and the flowing waters attracted lots of significant personalities that preferred to live on the peaceful foothills of the mountain. The byzantine monuments found by the archaeologists are located near the settlements of Mischos, Linos, Kerasia and Sosti. Among the findings there are some 1-room temples, byzantine churches with domes, ruins, monasteries and byzantine baths. There is also a stone bridge, a 3-room church dating back to the Roman period and a watermill near the village Kerasia.
