It is the highest mountain in southern Greece, reaching 2,512 m. There are many tales about the origin of the name: some say it comes from the bird Gionis, which nests on the slopes of the mountain, while others argue it originates from neighboring Albania. The mountain range of Giona is also connected with a legend about a sleeping prince, because the shape formed by the peaks is incredibly reminiscent of a knight asleep. In the lush forests of conifers, Giona is the home of a considerable number of animals such as wolves, wild boar, and roebuck. Looking to the skies as you wander about, you are sure to see a bird of prey on the hunt.
